Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient healing science originated in India thousands of years ago as a holistic system with the purpose of gaining and maintaining balance in life. Nowadays it is the only medical system that focuses on the individual and unique physical, mental and spiritual condition of the client and so treats the person, not the disease.
Ayurveda sees existance as a combination of 5 basic and organic elements: •Earth •Water •Fire •Air •Ether.
The distinctive combination of these elements creates three main groups divided by physical and emotional constitutuion similarities, called “Doshas”:
•Vata •Pitta •Kapha.
"The real voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes"
Albert Camus
Doshas are the combination of 2 of the elements. Vata is composed of air and ether, Pitta is composed of water and fire and Kapha of earth and water. The organic elements and their intrinsic energies compose and influence our physical and mental characteristics. We all have some of each of these “Doshas” in us and normally 1 or 2 of them are predominant.
When we deviate in excess from our original doshic constitution, we create new stages for ourselves called Vikriti (imbalance). Although we all need to face unavoidable changes (age, geographical realities, seasonal triggers, etc), these should not be seen as a justification to fall into physical and emotional chronic imbalances that, if not attended, can result in disease. Ayurveda focuses on these changes and imbalances and gives us a wide range of tools to find a gradual return to a balanced state.
There are several areas where imbalance can get triggered. Each one of them can have great effects on our health and should be addressed during an Ayurvedic consultation and program. Here are the most common causes of imbalances:
-
Physical imbalances (Lack of exercise, Environment, Diet, Contagious disease)
-
Emotional Imbalances (Relationships, Negative emotions, Addictions)
-
Mental Imbalances (misunderstanding our connection with our Higher Self)
-
Spiritual Imbalances (the unconscious and ignorant mind)
-
Karmic imbalances (moving away form our Dharma, our life work or path)
Ayurveda works on restoring the self by acknowledging the causes of our symptoms and consequently changing patterns we come to realize are damaging to us. As a science that seeks to treat the whole person, it needs to be approached as a long term and life lasting experience. Changing negative patterns or deep seeded imbalances over night is very difficult for most of us. The healing process will be one of introspection, developing awareness and learning who we are and how we can best care for ourselves, always taking into consideration our unique constitution, circumstances and patterns. Both Ayurvedic and Yogic traditions claim the only path to spiritual, emotional and physical health depend on us, not on external factors or generic treatments. The client is approached as a distinctive person who holds the keys to their own healing.
The tools that Ayurveda offers are natural and simple. Our big challenge is making them part of our everyday life and making our negative and damaging habits an exception, rather than the norm.
