Raja YOGA, The King of Yogas

About Classic Yoga

There are so many types of yoga out there! Isn´t it confusing? Which one should you practice? Why? What are the benefits?

At Be & Live Well we believe  Raja Yoga (aka "Royal") Yoga to be possibly the most complete kind of yoga. Raja Yoga is based on Patanjali´s Yoga Sutra teachings gathered in the 8 Limbs as a series of guidelines to help us through the control of fluctuations of our mind, where -it is believed- all our problems start! The 8 Limbs are:

  1. Yamas  - cultivating appropriate external or social practices

  2. Niyamas - cultivating appropriate internal or personal practices

  3. Asana - discipline of the body

  4. Pranayama - control of life force energies

  5. Pratyahara - withdraw of the senses

  6. Dharana - concentration

  7. Dhyana - meditation

  8. Samadi - oneness with the object of meditation

About Asanas

The benefits of Asanas and Meditation have been demonstrated over and over by yogis and by modern science.

Asanas are a series of postures created with the ultimate goal of allowing a continuous flow of life force (prana) through our body without restriction or blockages and so a great tool to maintain a healthy body and mind.

The objective of Asana is not to stay fit, although, no doubt, that is a great and necessary benefit. Mind work is the primordial focus and outcome. Our goal is to reach a meditative stage in which the body can work at its best and heal itself when we suffer imbalances. Awareness and concentration on the posture is indeed more important  than strength and flexibility! Although normally overlooked, the mental benefits of Asanas should not be underestimated.

Ayurvedic Yoga, the Yoga by Doshic constitution

Just as Ayurveda needs an individualized approach to benefit our bodies and mind, we believe Yoga does as well.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshic types require different types of exercise to accommodate their needs. Although certain people may be inclined to sports or exercise other than yoga, it has been proven that thanks to its mental and physical benefits, Yoga is indispensable for the wellbeing of those with serious health goals.

Exercising is generally good for us, but one of the most controversial and counteractive approaches to exercise nowadays is over-exercise. Too much exercise can have harmful effects on the body and can actually create inflammations that later in life may become real problems.
