About Asanas

The benefits of Asanas and Meditation have been demonstrated over and over by yogis and by modern science.

Asanas are a series of postures created with the ultimate goal of allowing a continuous flow of life force (prana) through our body without restriction or blockages and so they are a great tool to maintain a healthy body and mind.

The objective of Asana is not to stay fit, although, no doubt, that is a great and necessary benefit. Mind work is the primordial focus and outcome. Our goal is to reach a meditative stage in which the body can work at its best and heal itself when we suffer imbalances. Awareness and concentration on the posture is indeed more important  than strength and flexibility! Although normally overlooked, the mental benefits of Asanas should not be underestimated.

At a physical level, when practiced regularly, Asanas work on our nervous system, endocrine system, respiratory system, digestive system and circulatory system. Each Asana works on a combination of these systems so it has multiple benefits. Asanas are also one of the few types of exercise that work on cleaning our lymphatic system with inversions, twists and postures that squeeze the lymphatic fluids where other types of exercises cannot reach.

Asanas, or postures, are the third limb in Asthanga Yoga (click here for more information). They are considered a very important part of our yogic body discipline, but to attain balance and health, our job should not be reduced to doing Asanas.
